The existing living room was dominated by an oversized built-in bookcase that crowded the fireplace wall and made the space feel heavy and dated. The tall maple cabinetry competed with the room's natural light and blocked the visual connection to the garden beyond. The fireplace surround lacked presence, and the overall composition felt disconnected — furniture, storage, and focal points all fighting for attention rather than working together.

The Approach

We removed the tall bookcase entirely and replaced it with a low, clean-lined custom cabinet that anchors the wall without overwhelming it. The fireplace was resurfaced with a concrete-finish surround and flanked by floating shelves at varying heights — creating asymmetry that feels intentional and architectural. A large landscape photograph above the mantle draws the eye and establishes a calm focal point. The sectional was repositioned to open the room toward the sliding glass doors, restoring the indoor-outdoor flow that defines California living.

After Transformation

The room now breathes. Without the visual weight of the tall bookcase, natural light reaches deeper into the space, and the eye moves easily from the art above the fireplace through to the garden beyond the glass doors. The low cabinetry provides all the storage the family needs while maintaining an uncluttered sightline. Collected objects — ceramics, small sculptures, family photographs — are displayed with breathing room rather than crowded onto shelves. The result is a living room that feels both curated and lived-in, a space that calms the nervous system while supporting the rituals of daily life.
