Dining Room Art & Furniture Transformation

Before Transformation
The dining room had a striking red built-in shelving unit that gave the space its identity, but the furnishings around it didn't rise to meet it. A heavy rectangular wood table with patterned upholstered chairs and a matching bench filled the center of the room, creating a dense, grounded mass that blocked the flow of light from the vaulted ceiling. A yellow drum pendant hung above but didn't relate to any other element. The shelves themselves were mostly empty, and the white walls flanking them felt bare — the room had one bold gesture surrounded by understatement.

Before
The Approach
We replaced the rectangular table with a round white dining table and a set of sculptural oak chairs with low, curved backs — furniture that invites conversation and opens sightlines across the room. The yellow pendant was swapped for an amber glass globe that picks up the warm tones of the red shelving and casts a softer, more diffused light. On the left wall, a large-scale Aboriginal painting — rich with reds, golds, and ochres — was hung with a dedicated picture light above it, creating a second focal point that dialogues with the red shelving rather than competing with it. The shelves were curated with collected objects, ceramics, and small sculptures, each given space to breathe. A jute rug and a bamboo accent chair add texture at ground level.

After
After Transformation
The dining room has transformed from a space you walked through into a space you want to sit in. The round table changes everything — there are no head-of-table dynamics, no blocked views, just a circle of chairs oriented toward each other and toward the art. The Aboriginal painting brings cultural depth and emotional weight to the room, grounding it in story and place. The amber pendant ties the warm palette together overhead, while the curated shelves give the red built-in a reason to exist beyond color. This is a room that now holds both celebration and quiet meals with equal grace.
