Understanding Historic Architecture
The East Coast's architectural heritage is among the richest in the United States — and among the most demanding to design within. Pre-war apartments on the Upper East Side carry strict co-op renovation protocols. Greenwich colonials present rooms with formal proportions that resist casual furniture plans. Hudson Valley stone houses hold centuries of thermal memory in their walls. Hamptons estates must negotiate the tension between grand entertaining and intimate family life across four distinct seasons.
I have worked within these constraints — not theoretically, but directly. My Connecticut residential projects required navigating historical sensitivities, understanding how northern light behaves in rooms with deep-set windows and mature canopy cover, and respecting the architectural cadence that defines New England domestic life: the rhythm of entry halls, parlors, and layered living zones that unfold with intention rather than open-plan abandon.
Each building type — brownstone, colonial, pre-war apartment, shoreline estate — carries its own structural logic, its own relationship to natural light, and its own expectations for material and finish. A designer who does not understand these distinctions at a visceral level will produce work that feels imposed rather than integrated. My approach through bespoke interior design ensures that every intervention respects and elevates the existing architectural vocabulary.
