Before Transformation

The primary bedroom was a neutral blank — beige walls, a wicker headboard, a gold bedspread with a bed skirt, and a sunburst wire mirror on the wall. A small patterned rug sat on laminate-look flooring. The plantation shutters blocked light rather than filtering it, and a lone accent chair was tucked into the corner with a side table lamp. The vaulted ceiling was the room's best feature, but the beige palette flattened everything, and the space felt like a guest room in a vacation rental — pleasant but impersonal.

The Approach

We painted the walls a warm charcoal gray that immediately revealed the vaulted ceiling as a dramatic architectural feature — the white peak now lifts upward against the dark walls. A timber-framed four-poster canopy bed replaced the wicker headboard, introducing vertical structure and a sense of ceremony. White linen bedding with lace trim softens the dark palette, while a navy blue slipcovered settee at the foot of the bed adds color and a place to sit. A built-in window seat with storage drawers was added beneath the shutters, layered with striped and patterned cushions. Blue and white ceramic lamps on white nightstands flank the bed. A large antique-style rug in blue, cream, and gold grounds the entire room. A floor-length mirror was positioned to reflect the ensuite entry, doubling the sense of depth.

After Transformation

The bedroom now feels like a retreat — intentional, layered, and deeply personal. The gray walls create a cocoon that makes the white bedding glow and the blue textiles sing. The canopy bed gives the room a focal point it never had — something to orient around, something that says this room matters. The window seat has become the spot for morning coffee and evening reading. The rug brings warmth underfoot that the old laminate never could. Every surface has been considered: the patterned lampshades, the woven basket by the door, the cherry blossoms on the nightstand. This is a room designed for rest, and it does its job beautifully.
