The open-plan living and dining area was overwhelmed — a dark charcoal sofa draped with a colorful crochet blanket, a blonde wood dining set with green seat cushions, laminate flooring, and walls covered in tacked-up photos, ribbons, and art fair prints. A small TV sat above a basic fireplace mantel, and sheer curtains diffused what little light came through the sliding door. The room was full of life but had no visual order — every surface competed for attention, and the space felt smaller than it was.

The Approach

The entire ground floor was rethought as a single cohesive space. The fireplace was rebuilt with Moroccan-inspired zellige tile and a carved arch mirror above the mantel, becoming the room's anchor. A long white linen sofa replaced the dark one, and a blue velvet wingback chair was positioned by the sliding door with a floor cushion for casual seating. The reclaimed wood round coffee table brings warmth without visual weight. Encaustic cement tile replaced the laminate on the floor. A carved wood console with arched cutouts sits along the entry wall beneath an ornate bone-inlay mirror. Woven Roman shades with a striped valance frame the sliding door. A glass pendant light defines the reading corner. The clutter was edited — every remaining object was chosen.

After Transformation

The living room now breathes. The Moroccan fireplace gives the room a soul it never had — something handmade and storied at its center. The white sofa reflects light back into the room, and the blue wingback adds color that feels deliberate rather than accidental. The reclaimed wood coffee table holds a curated tray of objects — a wooden duck decoy, dried lavender, a small ceramic dish — that tell a story without overwhelming. The encaustic floor tiles connect this room to the kitchen, creating flow across the ground floor. The sliding door now opens onto the courtyard with its matching fountain, so inside and outside speak the same language. This is a room where a family can gather, where guests feel welcomed, and where nothing feels accidental.
