Before Transformation

The courtyard was a forgotten corner — a small brick-paved patio enclosed by bare stucco walls with two faded wooden folding chairs and a small round table. No shade, no planting, no reason to stay. The brick was uneven and the walls showed their age. It was a space you walked past on your way to somewhere else.

Before

The Approach

We resurfaced the ground with pale irregular flagstone that immediately lightened and softened the space. A Moroccan mosaic fountain was installed on the main wall — an arched zellige tile panel with a brass spout and carved stone basin that gives the courtyard a focal point and the sound of running water. A rattan daybed with indigo ikat cushions and blue-striped pillows was placed opposite, turning the courtyard into a destination. A round carved wood coffee table holds potted succulents and small collected objects. Climbing vines were trained along the top of the walls, and potted plants were grouped around the fountain basin to soften the edges.

After

After Transformation

The courtyard has become the most unexpected room in the house — the one guests discover and don't want to leave. The sound of water from the fountain changes the atmosphere completely, masking street noise and creating a sense of enclosure and calm. The ikat daybed is where morning coffee happens now, and where evening reading happens in summer. The succulents and trailing plants give the stone walls life without requiring maintenance. The flagstone stays cool underfoot even on warm days. This was a dead corner that became a sanctuary — proof that the smallest spaces can hold the most meaning when they're designed with intention.
