The living room had dramatic bones — soaring vaulted ceilings with twin skylights, wide-plank oak floors, and a glass stair railing — but the furnishings felt like a real estate staging. A black grand piano anchored one side while a minimal white sofa and black coffee table occupied the other, both sitting on neutral rugs that did nothing to connect them. Large-scale contemporary paintings flanked the central hallway, adding visual weight but no warmth. The room was impressive on paper but felt cold and transactional — a space designed to be photographed rather than lived in.

The Approach

We cleared the staging and started from the room's natural assets: the light pouring through the skylights, the warmth of the oak floor, and the generous proportions. A large chinoiserie panel in turquoise and gold was placed on the left wall, introducing pattern, story, and a connection to nature that the contemporary art couldn't provide. A white sectional replaced the formal seating, layered with coral, turquoise, and jade cushions that pull from the panel's palette. A turquoise lacquered credenza anchors the right wall, topped with a large photographic portrait and flanked by sculptural gold wall lights. Pampas grass in the stairwell alcove softens the architecture, and a botanical rug in sage and blush defines the seating area. Floor cushions and a round ottoman create flexible, informal seating that invites the room to be used in different ways.

After Transformation

The room now feels like it belongs to someone. The chinoiserie panel gives the space a sense of history and depth that the modern art couldn't — it's a piece you want to stand in front of, not just glance at. The turquoise credenza brings playfulness and confidence, and the mix of gold, coral, and jade throughout the room creates a palette that shifts with the daylight from the skylights. The pampas grass catches the afternoon light and moves gently with the air circulation, adding a living quality to the architecture. This is a room that holds both a quiet afternoon read and a dinner party with equal ease — layered, personal, and full of the kind of beauty that only comes from things chosen with intention.
