Honoring Mid-Century Architecture Through Intentional Design
Alex and Autumn's home began as a mid-century modern gem with solid architectural bones — clean sightlines, exposed structural elements, and a spatial logic rooted in the California modernist tradition. Rather than overwrite the architecture, I honored its lines and material logic, restoring integrity while recalibrating the home for contemporary family life in Los Angeles.
This was not a project about erasing the past. It was about listening to what the architecture already knew — and then bringing it into sharper focus through layered, expressive interior design that respects the home's DNA while pushing it forward. Every doorway, every window placement, every ceiling height told a story about the architects who designed this home decades ago. Our work was to continue that conversation.
The original floor plan offered remarkable spatial intelligence — open sightlines connecting living spaces, a relationship between indoor and outdoor that is quintessentially Californian. We preserved these qualities while introducing the warmth, texture, and personality that transform a well-built house into a home that truly resonates with its inhabitants.
A Bold Palette Grounded in Architectural Intelligence
Bold wallpapers, rich colour, and expressive furnishings became the vocabulary for this transformation. Each material decision was measured against the home's existing proportions — ensuring that every pattern, texture, and finish amplified the architecture rather than competing with it. The result is rooms that feel both architecturally coherent and emotionally alive.
The colour strategy moved beyond safe neutrals into saturated, confident territory. Deep indigos, warm ochres, and textured greens were deployed with precision — creating rooms that feel energized but never chaotic. This is the kind of interior design work that only comes from understanding spatial proportion at an architectural level. Each colour was tested against the Los Angeles light at multiple times of day, ensuring the palette performs beautifully from morning through evening.
Custom furnishings were selected and sourced to honour the mid-century spirit without replicating it. Vintage pieces sit alongside contemporary designs, creating a collected, layered atmosphere that suggests a home built over time rather than assembled from a single catalogue. The upholstery fabrics were chosen for both visual impact and daily durability — acknowledging that this is a home for living, not a museum.

For Alex and Autumn, this meant a home that functions beautifully for a busy professional household while simultaneously offering moments of stillness and visual delight in unexpected corners. The living areas support both gathering and retreat. The private spaces prioritize rest and sensory calm. Transition zones — hallways, entries, landings — became opportunities for curated moments rather than afterthoughts.
